Grateful.
The overwhelming community support and kindness shown these last few weeks in and around Harbor Springs has been extraordinary. It may sound silly, but we should take a moment to be proud of ourselves.
This last year has been hard on our community. Maybe we needed to be pushed a bit to remember how much we need each other. It has also been a good reminder, that we sometimes need help from outside. For instance, today, there is a crew from Kent County (Grand Rapids) cleaning up M-119.
Over and over, what I have heard is an earnest hope that we have turned a corner--together.
I have heard it at the warming shelters, where volunteers donated and made food to serve to those without power. I've heard it in the praise (from all corners) for city employees who raised to the challenge and provided exceptional service and communication throughout the crisis.
I have heard it in neighbors yelling across the street to check on one another. People stopping in the aisle of the Harbor Market to both checkup and catch up with friends. It's been there as people graciously welcomed folks without power into their homes. I have seen it in your incredible financial support for the High School Robotics team. And I have seen it in the 31,987 views this page has had in the last two weeks. There have been 4,098 clicks, shares, comments and likes these last two weeks, more than at any time since the page went live last summer.
Has everyone been pleasant and supportive? Nope. It would be unrealistic to think that they would be. There are some who are still struggling and are frustrated. And we all know a few for which feeling slighted or aggrieved has become a default position. But the last two weeks (frankly, the last 4 months) has shown us that our town can rise to the occasion.
Even in disagreement, the vast majority of the folks who live here begin from a place of good intention.
Back when I started this thing, I was reminded of a story Mr. Rogers told after 9/11. He said his mother used to tell him when there was a tragedy or hardship he should, "look for the helpers." She said there were always helpers rushing toward those in need.
These last few weeks so many of you have been helpers. But honestly, that has always been your inclination. To do your level best to help each other.
There will be more work to do and needs to be addressed in the days, weeks and months to come.
The Petoskey Harbor Springs Community Foundation has established an Emergency Response Fund. The money raised will support grants to fund eligible nonprofit organizations and government entities that are delivering emergency aid to those in need across Emmet County. Two weeks ago tomorrow, our community suffered what line workers have called a "Category 5" ice storm. Within a week 98% of power in the City had been restored. It may not have been a perfect response, but it sure was close. Neighbors caring for neighbors and our government living up to our highest expectations.
After the soccer game yesterday, I noticed a sign someone had taped on the employee entrance to City Hall. "Grateful" it says. Darn right.
Well done Harbor Springs! #HarborStrong
